Counseling NY International

For International Students

Some Tips:

  • Before arriving in the U.S, familiarize yourself with how the medical system works.  If you are taking a medication regularly, make sure you have enough medication for the length of your stay
  • If you need to meet with a psychiatrist regularly, find and make an appointment in advance, ask them about cost as well
  • If you have struggled with depression, anxiety, or other mental health problems in the past, take proactive steps to make sure you are supported and know what resources are available to you.  You may want to let instructors know that you sometimes have a hard time.
  • Make a plan to connect with your supports at home before you arrive: schedule times to talk with them regularly and be honest with them about how you are doing.
  • Practice realistic self-care and stress management techniques that you can use while you’re studying.
  • Plan in advance for how you will address problems if they arise.
  • Speak up as soon as you notice you’re not feeling like yourself
