Q: I need a book/film that the library doesn't carry. How can I find it?

A: If we don't carry something that you need, there are a few different ways to get it.

  1. The fastest way to acquire library materials that we don't carry would be to use the local public library systems near us, namely the Los Angeles Public Library, Burbank Public Library, and Glendale Public Library.

  2. Alternatively, you can use the local public college libraries. These include Cal State Los Angeles, Cal State Northridge, and UCLA.

  3. We can also find library materials for you via interlibrary loan. This process can take some time, however, since we would need to wait for your request to be mailed to us. This wait time is usually between 1 and 2 weeks. If you would like us to do that for you, you can make an interlibrary loan request in-person at the Riverside Branch, via email at library@nyfa.edu, over the phone at 818-333-3559, or fill out our Interlibrary Loan Request Form on this site.

Q: I think the library should carry something it currently doesn't have. How do I make that request?

A: You can make a item purchase request in-person at the Riverside Branch, via email at library@nyfa.edu, over the phone at 818-333-3559, or fill out our Item Requests Form on this site.

Q: How does the library acquire new materials?

A: We have a review process of new films coming out on the home market, as well as for item requests from our patrons. This review happens approximately every other month.

Q: Where can I see new items in the collection?

A: You can see new items as they are added to the collection on the Home Page of the Library Catalog.

Q: Can I do a film shoot in the library?

A: No, unfortunately students are not currently permitted to film on campus.

Q: How do I use the viewing stations in the library?

A: The viewing stations are located in the Reading Room at the Riverside Branch and are available on a first-come-first-served basis. Please come by the Riverside Branch and speak with library staff for access.

Q: I heard the Writing Center is in the library. What are their hours and how do I book an appointment?

Q: What happens if I lose a Library item?

A: If this happens you have two options. You can either replace the item on your own and give it to the Library or we will charge you a replacement fee based on the current market price of the item.

Q. Can I take the In Library Use Only copy of my textbook to class with me? I'll just be right down the hall and have it back to you in a couple hours!

A: No. As per department policy, we have one copy of all books listed as Required Readings on syllabi held as In Library Use Only. These are intended to be used as emergency copies for patrons who have forgotten or otherwise left their book at home. These must remain in the library for this purpose and cannot be taken to class. Instructors and students are expected to procure their own copies of required readings.
