The Pain That Made Me Smile is a drama, that focuses on a woman who is forced to move in with her 77-year-old father as his primary caregiver after he was injured on the job and learns that he has stage 4 lung cancer. As her father’s health continues to decline, her two sisters come to visit as we come up on the day of his 78th birthday. Comforted that she will have some help around the house for the day, she plans to express her overbearing load to her sisters in hopes that they will step up and assist her more with their father.
Upon their arrival, things do not go as planned and the woman begins to feel that her sisters are here to be more of a burden than of help, causing tensions to rise and things to take an unexpected turn. The three sisters must decide if they will fight for love or walk away forever.
Casting for the roles of Cassie and Julia.
Cassie (mid 20s-early 30s, African American - female) The youngest of the three sisters. She is a well-established psychiatrist who is married with 3 kids. She is a spoiled and sometimes selfish woman who has experienced nothing but the best, going from her parent’s house to living with her husband who is an IT engineer. Although their relationship is complicated, she is the closest to Liz. Cassie and Julia butt heads a lot because she doesn’t like how Julia comes in as if she is the H.B.I.C, she also feels as though she doesn’t know Julia because she was so young when Julia left and started her own family.
Julia (late 30s-40, African American - female) The eldest of the three sisters. She is a lawyer who has been trying to make partner at her law firm for several years now…which can be a sensitive subject. Julia is married with 4 kids; she is sophisticated and not afraid to let everyone know it. She was away at college while Cassie and Liz were growing up and went on to start her own family after graduating. This has put some distance in her relationship with her younger sisters. She also gets jealous of the bond that Liz and Cassie have, but doesn’t know how to be open enough to bring down her wall and let them in.
